On December 16th 2016, the IRS abolished the Certified Acceptance Agent program, which GamblingTaxes.ca was a member of. We consequently lost our ability to validate your identity in the process of obtaining your ITIN number. It was therefore necessary for you to provide a certified true copy of your passport with your ITIN application.
We are pleased to today announce that the IRS has reversed its decision and reinstated the program. The ways of validating your identity are now more simple and diverse if you decide to retain the services of a firm such as ours.
The abolition of the program, as the IRS itself acknowledged, was generated by a change of language in the PATH ACT which was introduced on January 1st 2017. The aim of this new legal formulation never was to abolish the Program, but since the IRS merely executes the decisions of the Congress, the Agency decided not to derogate from the new wording. This legislation simply stated that only IRS employees could now issue ITIN numbers. A request for an amendment was promptly tabled following the outcry raised by this unforeseen change among international taxpayers.
Fortunately, this amendment was introduced and implemented on April 17th 2017. This means a return to traditional methods.
If you are a customer with GamblingTaxes.ca and have already obtained your certified true copy of passport, this copy obviously remains valid. However, if you have an active file with GamblingTaxes.ca and haven’t yet gotten this copy, you can now:
1) Make an appointment with us for a validation in person.
2) Send us your original passport so we can subsequently validate your identity via a Skype interview.
3) Provide us with a certified true copy of passport, as it was already an option.
Note that these new options are valid only if you are dealing with a firm that is a member of the Certified Acceptance Agent program such as ours. If you attempt the recovery process by yourself, you are still required to provide a certified copy of your passport (or your original passport).
